Set in present day and based on the iconic Archie Comics characters, Riverdale is a surprising and subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their friends, exploring the surrealism of small town life — the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome facade.

Season 01 , Episode 1
Riverdale reels from the tragic death of Jason Blossom, a high school student; new student Veronica Lodge arrives in town; Cheryl Blossom stirs up trouble among the others while keeping a few secrets of her own.

Season 01 , Episode 2
Archie implores Miss Grundy to share what they overheard at Sweetwater River after details of Jason’s death are revealed; Betty hopes to fix her friendship with Archie, but undertakes a different tact with Veronica, who wants to make amends for her actions. Cheryl deals with the pressure of rumors about her brother’s death; and tensions boil over when Jughead uncovers a secret about Archie. Meanwhile, fall pep-rally plans are scheduled to include an appearance by Josie and the Pussycats.

Season 01 , Episode 3
New information about Jason’s death is uncovered and Cheryl comes under suspicion; a difficult decision leads to strain on Archie’s relationship with Miss Grundy; and Betty revives the school newspaper and seeks Jughead’s help in looking into the death. Meanwhile, Veronica and Ethel hear rumors of a “shame book” written by the school’s football players; and, after getting grounded, Archie looks for a way out to attend an event where Josie and the Pussycats are to perform a song he cowrote.

Season 01 , Episode 4
Jughead discovers an anonymous buyer for the drive-in plans to tear it down and launches a battle to keep it open; Betty’s friendship with Archie takes a hit after she uncovers shocking information about Miss Grundy’s past. Meanwhile, Veronica confronts her mother about a suspicious meeting between her and a shady Southside Serpent; and after uncovering Betty’s diary, Alice seizes the opportunity to destroy Archie’s golden-boy image.

Season 01 , Episode 5
The Blossom family prepares for Jason’s funeral, but do so with a secret agenda in mind; Archie sacks football after an opportunity to work with a new music mentor arises; Betty intensifies her investigation into Jason’s death and uncovers unsettling revelations about her family. Meanwhile, Veronica forms an unlikely friendship with Cheryl; and Hermoine seeks help from Fred after receiving a cryptic message from the Southside Serpents.

Season 01 , Episode 6
Valerie helps Archie prepare for his performance in the school’s annual variety show, which doesn’t sit well with Josie; Betty and Jughead’s investigation leads to a home for troubled youth and a face-to-face with Polly; Veronica’s improving relationship with her mother takes a hit after an unexpected betrayal. Also, Josie deals with her own issues at home after her overbearing father returns to see her perform at the variety show; and Hermoine begins work at Andrew’s Construction.

Season 01 , Episode 7
The destruction of an important piece of evidence triggers new speculation as to whom murdered Jason; things intensify when Jughead’s father gets back into the fray, which reveals unsolved issues between him and Fred. Meanwhile, in the aftermath of her fight with Hermione, Veronica decides to take matters into her own hands; and Cheryl makes an unexpected proposal to Betty.

Season 01 , Episode 8
On the verge of starting a construction job, Fred loses his crew, which could jeopardize his livelihood, so Archie rounds up his friends to pitch in and help, but things don’t go well. With his secret exposed, Jughead worries about how his friends will take it; Betty and Veronica consider throwing a baby shower for Polly, who is apprehensive in light of knowing how everyone feels.

Season 01 , Episode 9
A reluctant Archie has an ulterior motive for agreeing to escort Cheryl to her family’s official start of maple-syrup tapping, where he picks up information about Betty’s sister; Veronica attempts to be nice and befriends a classmate whose father’s illegal doings cause problems; Hermione wrestles with telling Fred the truth. Meanwhile, Alice plots revenge on the Blossoms with the help of her two daughters.

Season 01 , Episode 10
Archie hides his true feelings when his father plans to finalize the divorce from Archie’s Mom, and later tries to win back Valerie with a romantic evening. However, Betty impacts the plan by throwing a surprise birthday party for Jughead, and once Cheryl gets wind of the event, she tries to make it interesting, but things quickly get out of control. Meanwhile, Veronica considers whether to participate in the deposition to help get her Dad released.

Season 01 , Episode 11
Despite Betty being overwhelmed with overseeing Homecoming and Reunion weekend, Alice wants her to help with the Jason Blossom investigation. And Betty is not happy to learn that Veronica and Archie are helping Alice. Meanwhile, Jughead considers giving his father another chance after seeing him try to clean up his act; Polly and Cheryl both decide to go to Homecoming in Jason’s honor; and Fred and Mary attend the Homecoming dance, leaving him to possibly reconsider the divorce.

Season 01 , Episode 12
Archie and Veronica are shocked by the arrest but know they must come clean to their parents about what they uncovered and, still hurt by the betrayal of his friends and torn over whom to trust, a reluctant Jughead joins them in a quest for truth. Meanwhile, Cheryl confronts her mom about how she treats her as opposed to how she did Jason.

Season 01 , Episode 13
In the Season 1 finale, Archie and Veronica continue to grow closer, while Betty tires of her family acting as if nothing has happened and confronts her mother. Jughead lands in an unexpected situation, leaving Archie and the gang scrambling; Hermione makes Fred a too-good-to-be-true offer; and the truth about Blossom’s family business is revealed leaving Cheryl to take matters into her own hands.
