The Magicians centers around Brakebills University, a secret institution specializing in magic. There, amidst an unorthdox education of spellcasting, a group of twenty-something friends soon discover that a magical fantasy world they read about as children is all too real— and poses grave danger to humanity.

Season 01, Episode 01 – “Special Preview”
A group of twentysomethings studying magic in New York discover a real-life fantasy world that poses a great threat to humanity in this drama adapted from Lev Grossman’s book series.

Season 01, Episode 02 – “The Source of Magic”
The Brakebills students struggle to deal with the aftermath of a catastrophe that befalls the university. Back in Brooklyn, Julia makes her first foray into the mysterious world of Hedge Witches.

Season 01, Episode 03 – “Consequences of Advanced Spellcasting”
Quentin and Julia have an unexpected, and somewhat volatile, reunion; Penny is overwhelmed by the power of his own psychic abilities; and Alice is willing to do anything to find out what happened to her missing brother.

Season 01, Episode 04 – “The World in the Walls”
Quentin wakes up in a mental hospital and must set his panic aside to seek the help of the one person he least trusts. Meanwhile, Julia is hurt after her fallout with Quentin and commits to learning more powerful spells with the Hedge Witches.

Season 01, Episode 05 – “Mendings, Major and Minor”
The students are distracted by personal issues when their focus should be on training for the upcoming Welter’s Tournament.

Season 01, Episode 06 – “Impractical Applications”
The first-year students face something called “The Trials,” a series of unconventional and emotional tests, which result in expulsion from Brakebills for those who fail.

Season 01, Episode 07 – “The Mayakovsky Circumstance”
An uncompromising professor pushes boundaries both in magic and in the personal lives of his first-year students. Meanwhile, Julia must decide whether she’s ready to accept help and what that means for her future as a Magician.

Season 01, Episode 08 – “The Strangled Heart”
Brakebills is thrown into chaos when Penny is violently attacked by someone they thought was a friend while Quentin tries to find a connection to The Beast. After entering a rehab facility, Julia considers giving up magic for good.

Season 01, Episode 09 – “The Writing Room”
Quentin, Alice, Eliot and Penny travel to England to Plover’s estate in search of a missing magic button. Once there, they discover a haunting vision of the author’s true self. In other events, Julia, fresh off her rehab stint, looks for real meaning in her magic, but at a very high cost.

Season 01, Episode 10 – “Homecoming”
Penny learns for himself that the world of the Neitherlands is not as friendly as he had assumed. As Quentin and Alice work to save their friend, Julia faces opposition as she tries to join an eclectic group of magicians knowns as the Free Traders.

Season 01, Episode 11 – “Remedial Battle Magic”
Quentin and friends get a crash course in battle magic prior to a showdown in Fillory. As preparations take place, frustrations build and lead to some students growing closer, while others are pushed apart. Elsewhere, Julia and Kady have their limits tested while on a mission with the Free Traders.

Season 01, Episode 12 – “Thirty-Nine Graves”
The students wake up to vague memories and feelings of regret after a night of drinking. However, there’s no time for talking about what did or didn’t occur now that their lives depend on getting to the Netherlands as soon as possible.

Season 01, Episode 13 – “Have You Brought Me Little Cakes”
Season 1 concludes with Quentin and Julia using time magic to get to Fillory, where they try to catch up with the students who are 70 years ahead of them searching for the Beast.
